November 23 — Recording the Drums

“How did they get that drum sound?” is one of the most common questions you’ll hear in a recording studio. Walk into a session, and you’ll often see a mic for the vocalist, a pair of mics for the piano and… TEN MICS on the drums?! If you’ve ever wished for more time in the studio to experiment with the sound of a drum kit before hitting “record,” this workshop is for you. Join one of NMC’s recording engineers and an experienced session drummer as they work through the questions and decisions involved in a successful drum recording, and add to your drum recording playbook without the pressure of the studio clock ticking while the band waits in the lounge.

This workshop for drummers, audio engineers, and music producers will explore topics including:

  • Creative goals and technical requirements
  • Minimal mic techniques / maximal mic techniques
  • Mic choices and placements — common and uncommon
  • Processing after the microphone — dynamic, harmonic, and spatial
  • Drums in the mix
