NMC Café Barista and Visitor Experience Associate (Flex and Part-time)

Location: Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, Calgary
Reporting to: Visitor Experience and Café Manager

About this position

The Café and Visitor Experience Associate is a dynamic, part-time role that supports both the NMC Café and Gift Shop operations while also contributing to an exceptional Visitor Experience. The role will primarily work in the NMC Gift Shop and Café, preparing food, beverage and stocking retail items but will play an important role in welcoming guests and providing information on Studio Bell’s exhibitions and programming. This role will require availability from Saturday to Monday with occasional shifts on other days of the week, including evenings and holidays.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

NMC Café and Gift Shop:

  • Greet customers and take food and beverage orders.
  • Prepare and serve coffee, tea and take away food items.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization behind the café bar and on the retail sales floor.
  • Assist with quarterly inventory management.
  • Process transaction accurately using point of sale system.
  • Manage opening and closing cash procedures and daily cash reconciliation.
  • Keeping equipment operating by following operating instructions; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs. 
  • Ensuring that all food products are handled, stored, prepared, and served safely.
  • Adhering to all food safety regulations and quality controls.

Visitor Experience:  

  • Communicate with the public about NMC’s collection, exhibitions, programs, and upcoming events at Studio Bell.
  • Foster a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for guests.
  • Assist with wayfinding, ticketing and addressing visitor inquiries
  • Provide conflict resolution among visitors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Foster a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for guests.
  • Other tasks as required.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in customer service, retail, and/or hospitality.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ barista experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with sales using a POS system and ticketing software.
  • Experience in reporting, budgeting, and cash handling.
  • Proficiency in both Mac-based and PC-based computer platforms.
  • Ability to multitask and transition between café and visitor support duties.
  • A positive, collaborative, and solution-oriented attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written. French or another second language would be an asset. 
  • Pro-serve Certification is an asset.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays and varying shifts.
