Café Barista and Sales Associate (Part-time)

Location: Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, Calgary
Reporting to: Visitor Experience and Café Manager

About this Position

The Café Barista and Sales Associate is a part-time position and is responsible for providing a positive, consistent, and professional customer service and sales experience to customers of the NMC Gift Shop and Café. The associate is tasked with understanding both the food and beverage offerings as well as the products within the retail side of the NMC Gift Shop. Their primary duties will focus on the café side of the shop; however, retail assistance may be required from time to time. The associate stays current on all coffee and tea industry trends, employing this knowledge while providing an elevated level of customer service to guests in the space. They are also responsible for educating customers about our premium coffee and tea and the culinary menu that our Café offers. This position can expect to receive cross-training with the Visitor Experience team and may be expected to fulfill tasks with the Visitor Experience Team, as assigned by the Visitor Experience Manager. This position will require open availability with weekends, evenings, and some weekday availability.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Customer Service

  • Welcoming customers and assist in determining their coffee interest.
  • Assisting in the sale of retail items, including keeping a keen understanding of the newest products and offerings.
  • Preparing and selling a wide variety of food items and beverages, following prescribed recipes and preparations techniques for coffee and tea drinks.

Cash Handling and Inventory

  • Managing opening and closing cash procedures and daily cash reconciliation.
  • Taking inventory and replenishing items throughout the café when needed.
  • Assist with quarterly inventory counts.

Operations and Safe Food Handling

  • Cleaning and restocking behind bar and café area, emptying trash, and sanitizing equipment and dishes when needed; always maintaining a clean and safe work environment, adhering to safety and sanitation policies.
  • Keeping equipment operating by following operating instructions; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Ensuring that all food products are handled, stored, prepared, and served safely.
  • Adhering to all food safety regulations and quality controls.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment, adhering to safety and sanitation policies.

Visitor Experience

  • Communicate with the public about NMC’s collection, exhibitions, programs, and upcoming events at Studio Bell.
  • Address and resolve customer issues in-person and online.
  • Provide conflict resolution among visitors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Foster a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for guests.
  • Assisting in ticket sales, box office shifts and answering emails and calls.
  • Other tasks as required.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should possess:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in customer service, retail, and/or hospitality.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ barista experience.
  • Experience with sales using a POS system and ticketing software.
  • Experience in reporting, budgeting, and cash handling.
  • Proficiency in both Mac-based and PC-based computer platforms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with visitors, team members, and volunteers to convey information, answer questions, and resolve conflicts.
  • A positive, collaborative, and solution-oriented attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written. French or another second language would be an asset.
  • Pro-serve Certification is an asset.
  • Availability to work on occasional evenings.

Remuneration

This part-time position offers a flexible schedule with hours ranging between 4-40 hours per week at a rate of $16.00 per hour.
