The Andy Kim Christmas After-Party — Oscill8
The Andy Kim Christmas After-Party — Oscill8

Live electronic performing arts society Oscill8 hits the legendary King Eddy stage on December 13 featuring Byron Fredrick, Lokey, verticalpark, and Dark Surface. National Music Centre is pleased to present this free show as part of the official Andy Kim Christmas After-Party.

About Byron Fredrick:

Byron Fredrick (aka Suncatjah) is a musician/producer from Calgary Alberta, Canada. Playing keyboards and bass in local bands since the mid 1990’s, Fredrick’s musical projects have taken him over a wide musical landscape including Reggae, Soca, Rock, Funk, and Electronic.

In the early 2000s, Fredrick committed to becoming more involved in production blending the styles he grew up playing with contemporary electronic music sensibilities. With one foot in old world techniques and the other in the new, he explores the musical terrains of House and Techno as Byron Fredrick and synth-driven Dub as Suncatjah.

At live performances, audiences can expect a deeply dubbed out/synth driven live set via electronics and live instrumentation. Expect broken and 4/4 beats, a Rhodes lick here, a TB 303 groove there, bass... lots of bass… All the while riding duby reverb and delay soaked feedback loops creating deep atmospheric textures.

About Lokey:

Ecologist and creative soul Leif Olson, aka lokey (that strange bass layer), creates live electronic music melding glitchy bass and boom bap beats with lush downtempo soundscapes and oddly melodic techno explorations. His improvised, spur of the moment compositions draw on evolving performance engines and local nuances to conjure new and original music into the world. As a founding member and president of Alberta's Oscill8 Collective, he actively works to highlight and promote Alberta's electronic performing arts.

About verticalpark:

Denis Laing is a Calgary-based electronic music producer and performer. His project, verticalpark, will take you on a journey of melodic rhythms with elements of trance, progressive house and deep techno. He has been creating music for over 3 decades, being influenced at an early age by electronic music pioneers Jean-Michel Jarre and Kraftwerk. He began performing live while attending the University of Alberta in the early 90’s. Denis’ style has evolved over the years from experimental, to Pop, to his most recent style of Melodic House.

About Dark Surface:

An avid selector and seasoned producer under various guises, Christian von Ompteda’s ongoing journey through sound is testament to an enduring passion. Starting out as a DJ in the heady 90’s rave scene in Toronto, and developing his craft through three decades of musical evolution, Christian’s musical versatility is unmatched. In the ever-transforming tapestry of music, he stands as both a guardian of the past and a visionary for the future.

The Dark Surface project explores the history and ongoing innovation of breakbeat music. Drawing from the roots of sampled ancestors like reggae/funk/hip hop, it chronicles the transformation of the sound, ranging from classic hardcore to Jungle to modern (Drum &) Bass, and the many hybridized subgenres which permeate this diverse musical realm.
